GRACE HOPPER
{1906–1992}
PROFESSOR • PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE CREATOR • REAR ADMIRAL
During WWII, this math professor enlisted in the Navy. She soon became the third programmer on the United States’ first computer—a massive machine measuring 51 x 8 x 8 feet. Called the Mother of COBOL (the world’s most widely used programming language for businesses), Grace specialized in developing English-like coding systems that made computers more programmer- and application-friendly. She also created the first “compiler” to translate between programming languages and coined the fear-inducing computer term “bug” when she discovered an actual moth was the culprit behind a computer failure. After closing out her career by training future techies, Amazing Grace retired from the military at age seventy-nine as a rear admiral and the oldest-serving U.S. naval officer.
“Probably the most dangerous phrase that anyone could use in the world today is that dreadful one: ‘But we’ve always done it that way.’”
GRACE HOPPER
COMPUTER SCIENTIST
